The Power Agents project aims at spreading knowledge of energy saving and changing behaviour in households by clear positive messages. The project wants to motivate and support young people in becoming “Power Agents” who take care about their own energy consumption and who spread their knowledge by taking care of the energy consumption of their families and their personal surroundings. The Power Agents project is part of the EU project “Mein Haus spart” (“My house saves”).

The project “strengthening the regional economy by creation or securing employment in the Ruhr area by independent energy consultancy of private consumers living in or owning old buildings” is implemented by the consumer organisation of the German state North Rhine-Westphailia (Verbraucherzentrale NRW). The Ruhr area was chosen, because the part of not yet refurbished old houses is higher than average.

In 2000 a campaign to address stand-by consumption of household appliances that make a up a significant share of household electricity consumption was started. The campaign was called Aus.Wirklich aus? (Off. Really off?) and was meant to be a pilot project for a larger, country-wide campaign. The campaign was based on a two-pronged strategy, based on mass media on the one hand and appliance retailers on the other hand. There was a mass media campaign, mainly in newspapers and radio spots, backed up by a cinema spot.

The energy-consumption in the buildings of the municipality of Rommerskirchen was constantly rising. First attempts of regulating the controllers of the system did not succeed. The consultancy of the EnergyAgency.NRW brought up the idea of performance contracting.
 
The real estate of the municipality is quite diverse, like schools, fire brigade buildings, public swimming pool, multifunctional event hall, gyms, etc. Consulting engineers have been mandated to plan efficient measures and then call for tender. This has been successful.

The EcoTopTen (ETT) initiative is an innovation and communication system for sustainable products and sustainable consumption started by the Oeko-Institut in Germany. The ETT initiative started its first phase (phase 1) with two interlinked but separate parts – the ETT research and development project on sustainable products, and the ETT consumer information campaign.
